What to know about the mother of Professor Wole Soyinka.

Grace Eniola Soyinka (nee Jenkins-Harrison) was born in 1908 to Jenkins-Harrison and Anne Lape Iyabode Ransome kuti. She was a shopkeeper, a Nigerian activist, and a member of the aristocratic Ransome-Kuti family.
She co-founded the Abeokuta women's union with Mrs Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, her aunt-in-law. The women's union which was popularly known as the Egba women's union was a well organized and disciplined organization aimed at fighting for the rights of the Egba women.
She got married to an Anglican minister named Samuel Ayodele Soyinka, and their marriage was blessed with seven children. Wole Soyinka (the 1986 winner of the Nobel prize in literature) is the second child. In Wole Soyinka's novel, Ake: the years of childhood, he gave a detailed account of his parents.
He described his mother as a strict disciplinarian and a devoted Christian, and in the novel, she was nicknamed "wild Christian".
Mrs Eniola Soyinka as said, was an amiable consort of Mrs Funmilayo Ransome Kuti. They both protested (alongside with other women) against the taxes introduced by the then Ake of Abeokuta, Oba Samuel Oladapo Ademola ll. Their protest led to the abdication of the king for two years before he was later recalled back to the throne. Interesting, the
present Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi lll was the one that accompanied the Alake of Egba to exile. He was at that period living with the Alake of Egba. In the quest of royalty, Oba Lamidi as a young boy was sent to the Alake to learn more about royalty, and he had part of his education there.
